Gingivitis is a disease that attacks the gums and bone that surround and support your teeth. Gingivitis is usually painless, so you may not know that you need it. If you have any of the following symptoms, Dr. Holbrook may recommend treatment for gingivitis:

  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
  • Red, swollen, or sore gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that will not go away
  • Receding gums
  • Formation of deep pockets between the teeth and the gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth

To treat gingivitis, our dentist may recommend extra professional teeth cleanings. Julie, our hygienist will remove all of the plaque and tartar from your teeth using a small metal tool. If this is not sufficient, scaling and root planing may be recommended. During this deep cleaning procedure, Dr. Holbrook will clean the plaque and tartar from your teeth, above and below the gum line. Your tooth roots will be smoothed to make it harder for plaque to adhere to them. Dr. Holbrook also performs laser treatments to treat gingivitis.
