Occlusal disease is a destructive process that can happen when a patient has a misaligned bite. Forces are applied to the teeth whenever they meet. When a patient’s teeth are aligned properly, the teeth and the jaw joint muscles are designed to withstand those forces. If you have any of the following symptoms, Dr. Holbrook may recommend treatment for occlusal disease:
- Wear and fractures of teeth and restorations
- Severe tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
- Loosening of teeth
- Accelerated bone loss
- Pain in the facial and TMJ muscles
- Tiredness in the face
Initial treatment often includes a custom-made night guard. Night guards are worn over the teeth during sleep and slow down the damage caused by occlusal disease. Bite correction can help control and distribute the forces in your bite. To correct your bite, our dentist may reshape your teeth so your teeth fit together correctly. Orthodontics, which includes braces, retainers, and other dental appliances, is the most common treatment for a bad bite. If there are permanent teeth missing from your smile, our dentist may replace them using dental crowns or dental implants to improve your bite.
